The Soo Indians traveled to Houghton, MI to play the Ojibwa Eagles in a Northern Lakes Hockey League (NLHL) game this past weekend. After handling the Eagles fairly easily in their last few meetings, they were met with a fury of action and battle.
Saturday's game resulted in a high scoring 5-5 tie. Five goals were scored in the first period alone. Colby Spoonemore (Alex Goodhue) opened up the scoring at 8:32, Gavin Burbach (Alex Goodhue, Colby Spoonemore) at 11:31, Colby Spoonemore (unassisted) at 14:37 and Chris Hoffman (Chad McLintock) at 15:06. Ojibwa put in two goals of their own and the Soo led 4-2 after one.
In the second, Gavin Burbach (Colby Spoonemore, Cody Blom) made it 5-2 just :14 seconds in. Ojibwa, however, fought back and scored two goals of their own in the period to go to the break with the Indians up 5-4.
The third period was back and forth, but the Eagles scored the lone goal to salvage a tie in a game where they were down by 3 goals at one point. Adam Eno and Joey Gravedoni split goaltending duties with Gravedoni earning the tie.
On Sunday, the game had much less scoring. The Indians fought and took the win 3-2. Goals came from Dave Castellion (Corey Jewell, Chris Hoffman), Castellion (unassisted) and Colby Spoonemore (Alex Goodhue) with the shorthanded, game winning goal. Joey Gravedoni played net and stopped 22 of 24 shots for the victory.
The Indians remain in fourth place in the league with 13 points; three behind third place Thunder Bay Kings. Spoonemore's action over the weekend put him second place in league scoring, just two points out of first.
The Indians will host the Lansing Capitals in non-league action next weekend at the Taffy Abel Arena.
