 .:Indians weak in Madison Cup
.:Posted on Sunday, February 14 @ 11:10:07 EST by Administrator
Team Related After a very good showing against Thunder Bay last weekend, the Indians traveled to Madison,Wisconsin to participate in the Madison Gold Cup Tournament.  The best teams in the country are there and this is an outstanding opportunity for the Soo to show who they are.  Unfortunately for us, we seemed overwhelmed by the showcase and didn't fair so well.

Game one against the #7 ranked Team Illinois resulted in a 6-0 loss.  Joey Gravedoni played net and according to Coach Harwood, "we had plenty of opportunities to score some goals, but didn't follow through."

It only got tougher when later that day the Indians battled the #2 ranked Belle Tire team from Detroit.  Adam Eno played net and the Indians got a taste of playing the top ranked teams in the country.  Belle Tire took the game quite easily with an 11-2 victory.  Colby Spoonemore (Corey Jewell, Gavin Burbach) and Alex Goodhue (Dave Castellion, Gavin Burbach) scored the goals for the Indians.

After a good night's rest, the Indians faced off against league rival, Capital Centre Pride.  Gravedoni played net and suffered a 7-2 loss.  Corey Jewell (Colby Spoonemore) and Dave Castellion (unassisted) provided the scoring for the Indians.

After the brackets were compiled, the Soo's final game would be against the host Madison Capitals, currently ranked #19.  Adam Eno guarded the net and, according to Coach Harwood, "played very well for us again Madison."  Regardless, the Soo lost the game 4-2.  Scoring was provided by Gavin Burbach (Jeremy Kaunisto, Dave Castellion) and Corey Jewell (Chris Hoffman).

Coach Harwood commented on his team's play this weekend.  "We didn't play well at all this weekend.  This team could have ran with all these teams this weekend, but they couldn't get it together."  Harwood added, "Even so, these kids did get a good taste of what kind of play it takes to be ranked among the best in the country.  We played against machines out there.  I still expected us to do much better than we did."

On a positive note, the Indians' leading scorer, Colby Spoonemore, has been voted the leagues MVP of the month and has just signed with the Aberdeen Wings of the North American Hockey League (NAHL).  Congratulation, Colby!
