.:Indians Take Awards and Honors in NLHL
.:Posted on Thursday, February 25 @ 13:16:46 EST by Administrator
Team Related The Soo Indians finished the regular season with a 5-9-6 record in Northern Lakes Hockey League (NLHL) (15-32-9 overall) play this season ending up in fourth place, just one point behind the third place team, Thunder Bay Kings. This past weekend, the Indians traveled to Faribault, MN, home of Shattuck St. Mary's, to play in the league's inaugural tournament.  The results ended the same as the regular season with Shattuck finishing first and the Indians finishing fourth.

The league held its first banquet on Saturday night in which two Soo Indians players received recognition for their play this season.  Forward Colby Spoonemore was named the leagues Player of the Month for January and defenseman Jeremy Gravedoni was named to the NLHL First Team All-Stars.

Even though the Indians went only 1-4-1 in January, Spoonemore netted himself 10 points to earn the Butte, MT native Player of the Month award for January.  Spoonemore recently signed a tender to play with the Aberdeen Wings of the NAHL, where the 5-foot-7 forward will look to continue his development.

“Colby’s greatest assets are his acceleration and ability to find open ice and maneuver with the puck in tight places,” Coach Jerry Harwood said. “He also plays the game with grit and goes to all the tough places on the rink and won’t back down from anyone.”

Jeremy Gravedoni, a Petoskey, MI native, in his second year with the Indians was voted to the NLHL First Team by the league's coaches.  The 6' - 185 pound defenseman finished the season with a goal and five assists while manning the blue line for the Soo.

"Jeremy is a very valuable piece of our team and anchored our defense this season," says Harwood.  "He makes very few mistakes and can see the entire ice when he plays.  He also play much bigger than his 6 foot frame.  I am very proud to see Jeremy win this award.  He's very deserving of it."

The Indians start the first round of the State Championship Tournament by playing S2 Hockey this weekend at the Taffy Abel Arena.  The winner of the "Best of Three" series advances to the tournament while the other team calls it quits for the year.
