The Soo Indians hosted S2 Hockey over the weekend at the
Taffy Abel Arena for the MAHA State Playdowns. It was a best 2 out of 3
series with the winner heading to Detroit shortly for the State Championship Tournament
and the loser heading home and ending their season.
S2
didn't wait long to let their intentions known when they scored just :45
seconds into game 1. The Soo fought back, though, with a goal from Dave
Castellion (Matt Samuel) at 4:46 to tie the game.
In the second period, Jeremy Gravedoni (Samuel,
Castellion) at struck at 11:41 to take a 2-1 lead. In the third, the Soo
pulled out two more goals from Levi Blom (Castellion, Colby Spoonemore) at 3:32
and Nate Fitzpatrick (Levi Blom) at 8:47. S2 came back and scored
two goals in just over a minute apart to pull within one, but they couldn't net
the 4th for a tie.
Joey Gravedoni stopped 25 of 28 shots while the Soo managed
42 shots on goals against S2.
Going into Sunday morning's game with a 1-0 lead was
certainly an advantage for the Soo. The final score was 5-2 with the Soo
moving on to the playoffs. Goal scorers for the Indians were Gavin
Burbach (Dave Castellion, Corey Jewell), Alex Goodhue (Colby Spoonemore),
Jeremy Gravedoni (Goodhue, Castellion), Kyle Maleport (unassisted on a
